The best VPS hosting in the USA in 2026 is not one provider, it is a shelf. Price the same 2 vCPU / 4 GB server in a US data center at ten companies and they fall into three groups: five that charge €5 to $12 a month in exchange for a contract term or a euro invoice, four that charge $19 to $25 with no commitment beyond the month, and Hetzner, which since June 15, 2026 stands alone at $37.49. Pick the shelf by how long you will keep the server and what currency you want on the invoice; the brand ranking takes care of itself after that.
| Keeping it a year or more, price first | netcup VPS 500 G12, Manassas: €5.91/mo incl. VAT (€4.97 net), 12-month term, 2 vCores / 4 GB DDR5 ECC / 128 GB NVMe |
| Dollar invoice, US company, one-year term | IONOS VPS M+: $11/mo regular ($4 for the first 3 months), 2 vCores / 4 GB / 120 GB NVMe |
| Most RAM, two-year term | Contabo Cloud VPS 4: €5.50/mo plus a US location fee, 4 vCPU / 8 GB / 100 GB SSD |
| Might leave next month | Vultr $20 (SSD) or $24 (NVMe), DigitalOcean $24, hourly billing, no term |
| Hetzner | CPX21 (3 vCPU / 4 GB) is $37.49 excl. IPv4 in Ashburn and Hillsboro since June 15, 2026. Only worth staying on if you hold an older-price server. |
Which is the best VPS hosting in the USA right now?
Three answers, one per situation. They come from a rule we wrote down before pulling any prices: rank by the monthly price of a 2 vCPU / 4 GB server in a US data center, and break ties by how much of the hardware claim can be checked from a public source. That rule put a provider we have no affiliate relationship with in first place, and it stays there.
Lowest price on current hardware: netcup (Manassas, Virginia)
netcup's VPS 500 G12 is €5.91 a month including 19% German VAT, €4.97 net, for 2 vCores, 4 GB of DDR5 ECC RAM and 128 GB of NVMe. The price is the same in "Manassas/USA (MNZ)" as in Nuremberg. It needs a 12-month term at that price, or you can pay hourly at €0.010 with "no minimum contract terms". netcup does not print the CPU model on the plan page; public yabs runs from its Manassas location on the G12 root-server line show an AMD EPYC 9645, which is the current EPYC generation. We do not earn anything if you sign up. netcup VPS plans.
Dollar billing and US data centers: IONOS VPS M+
IONOS sells 2 vCores, 4 GB and 120 GB of NVMe for $4 a month for the first three months and $11 a month after that, on a one-year term, with unlimited traffic and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Its US data centers include an IONOS-owned facility in Lenexa, Kansas, plus Newark, New Jersey and Las Vegas, Nevada. IONOS describes its hardware only as "latest AMD and Intel CPUs", so this page makes no claim about its speed against netcup or anyone else. Budget on $11, not $4. IONOS VPS plans.
Most RAM per euro: Contabo Cloud VPS 4
Contabo's Cloud VPS 4 is 4 vCPU cores, 8 GB of RAM and 100 GB of SSD for €5.50 a month including VAT on a 24-month term, twice the RAM of the other two picks. Its US regions are New York City, St. Louis and Seattle, and for the coastal ones Contabo says plainly that "we charge a Location Fee to cover higher cost of operating Data Centers in major cities like New York or Seattle". The fee shows in the customer panel, not on the plan page, so the US total is above €5.50. Choose it when the workload wants RAM and you are sure about two years. Contabo Cloud VPS plans.
What does the same 2 vCPU / 4 GB server cost in a US data center?
This is the table the "best USA VPS" lists never show, because every provider's teaser price is for a different machine. Same shape, same country, same day. Where a provider does not sell exactly 2 vCPU / 4 GB, the closest plan is listed and the difference is in the specs column.
| Provider, plan | vCPU / RAM / disk | US locations | Monthly price | Commitment | Traffic |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| netcup VPS 500 G12 | 2 / 4 GB DDR5 ECC / 128 GB NVMe | Manassas VA | €5.91 incl. VAT (€4.97 net) | 12 months, or hourly €0.010/h | not listed here |
| Contabo Cloud VPS 4 | 4 / 8 GB / 100 GB SSD | New York, St. Louis, Seattle | €5.50 incl. VAT + US location fee | 24 months | not listed here |
| InterServer, 2 slices | 1 / 4 GB / 80 GB SSD | New York, Dallas, Los Angeles | $6 (4 slices, 2 / 8 GB / 160 GB, $12) | Month to month | 4 TB (8 TB at 4 slices) |
| Hostinger KVM 2 | 2 / 8 GB / 100 GB NVMe | Phoenix, Boston | $8.99, renews $14.99 | 24 months | 8 TB |
| IONOS VPS M+ | 2 / 4 GB / 120 GB NVMe | US data centers (Lenexa, Newark, Las Vegas) | $11 regular, $4 first 3 months | 12 months | Unlimited |
| Hostwinds unmanaged Linux | 2 / 4 GB / 75 GB | Seattle, Dallas | $18.99 | Month to month | 2 TB |
| Vultr Cloud Compute (vc2-2c-4gb) | 2 / 4 GB / 80 GB SSD | New Jersey, Chicago, Dallas, Seattle, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Silicon Valley, Miami | $20 | Hourly, no term | 3 TB |
| Vultr High Performance (vhp-2c-4gb-amd) | 2 / 4 GB / 100 GB NVMe | same eight | $24 | Hourly, no term | 5 TB |
| DigitalOcean Basic Droplet | 2 / 4 GiB / 80 GiB SSD | New York City, San Francisco, Atlanta and others | $24 | Hourly, no term | 4,000 GiB |
| RackNerd KVM VPS 4 GB | 4 / 4 GB / 130 GB SSD | Los Angeles, San Jose, Seattle, Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago, New York, Ashburn | $24.59 list price | Monthly | 3 TB |
| Hetzner CPX21 | 3 / 4 GB / 80 GB NVMe | Ashburn VA, Hillsboro OR | $37.49 excl. IPv4 | Hourly, no term | at least 1 TB |
Three notes on the table. RackNerd's row is its list price; the low RackNerd prices people talk about are promotional yearly deals, which change with each campaign, so they are not in a list-price table. Kamatera prices by configurator rather than fixed plans, and Linode's pricing page refused our requests on the day we checked, so neither has a number here rather than a guessed one. And the two "not listed here" traffic cells mean the provider's plan page did not state an allowance in a form we could copy, not that there is none.
Read down the price column and the three shelves are visible without any ranking: five providers between €5.50 and $11, four between $18.99 and $24.59, and Hetzner at $37.49. The Hetzner number is new; until June 15, 2026 the same plan was $13.99, and the whole story of that change is on our Hetzner price increase page.
Why is the cheapest VPS hosting in the USA this cheap?
Because each one is asking for something other than money. The conditions are on the pricing pages; they are just not in the headline number.
A term. netcup's €5.91 needs 12 months (hourly billing exists at a slightly higher effective rate). IONOS's $11 is a one-year contract. Hostinger's $8.99 and Contabo's €5.50 both need 24 months. InterServer is the one low-tier provider billed month to month; its plan page lists SSD storage rather than NVMe, which is part of how the price stays where it is.
A renewal price. Hostinger's KVM 2 renews at $14.99 after the two-year term, which is still under the DigitalOcean shelf but 67% above the sticker. IONOS's $4 is a three-month promotion in front of the $11 regular price.
A euro invoice. netcup and Contabo bill in euros, and the VAT shown depends on the country you select at checkout. For a personal server that is a line on a card statement; for a US company with an accounts-payable process it can be the deciding factor.
A location fee. Contabo's US regions carry a fee on top of the plan price, shown in the customer panel. The €5.50 you see is the European price.
What this page does not do is tell you which of these providers oversubscribes its hosts or how fast the disks are under load. That would need testing this page did not do, and the plan pages do not say. The individual reviews linked at the end cover what can be checked for each one.
When is DigitalOcean or Vultr worth $20 to $24?
When the server might not exist next month, or when it is one of many. Both bill by the hour with no term, both invoice in dollars from US companies, and both have the tooling that a $6 plan does not: an API you can script against, snapshots, private networking, load balancers, and a marketplace of ready images. Vultr's regular SSD plan at $20 is the cheapest way onto that shelf; its NVMe High Performance plan and DigitalOcean's Basic Droplet are both $24. Vultr lists eight US locations, from New Jersey to Silicon Valley; DigitalOcean's regional availability page lists New York City, San Francisco and Atlanta plus newer US regions, with product availability varying by region.
Hetzner used to be the reason not to pay $24. In Ashburn and Hillsboro it now costs $37.49 for the CPX21, and Hetzner's documentation states that those locations "are currently only available for cloud products (Cloud Shared AMD, Cloud Dedicated AMD, and Cloud features)", which makes the CPX11 at $20.49 (2 vCPU / 2 GB) the entry point in the US, where Germany gets an Intel CX23 at €5.49. Hostwinds sits on this shelf on price ($18.99, Seattle and Dallas) but bills month to month rather than hourly, and RackNerd's list price for its 4 GB plan ($24.59, with 4 vCPU) lands here too.
Do you need a managed VPS instead?
Everything in the table above is unmanaged: you get root, and updates, backups, firewall rules and the 3 a.m. restart are yours. If you have never run apt upgrade on a server you depend on, the cheapest plan on this page is the wrong purchase, and the price difference between a $6 unmanaged server and a managed one is the cost of having someone else do that work. The managed picks live on their own pages: ScalaHosting's managed VPS and Cloudways on top of DigitalOcean or Vultr are the two we cover in depth.
Where are the US data centers?
"US VPS" on a provider's page can mean one city or eight. This is what each pricing or location page states.
| Provider | US locations for VPS |
|---|---|
| netcup | Manassas, Virginia |
| Contabo | New York City (US East), St. Louis (US Central), Seattle (US West) |
| InterServer | New York City, Dallas, Los Angeles |
| Hostinger | Phoenix and Boston. Hostinger's location page notes that its Asheville facility is "not available for VPS, only for web and cloud plans". |
| IONOS | Lenexa (Kansas), Newark (New Jersey), Las Vegas (Nevada) |
| Hostwinds | Seattle, Dallas |
| Vultr | New Jersey, Chicago, Dallas, Seattle, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Silicon Valley, Miami |
| DigitalOcean | New York City (NYC1-3), San Francisco (SFO2-3), Atlanta, plus Richmond, Kansas City and Memphis on its regional availability page; check product availability per region |
| Hetzner | Ashburn (Virginia), Hillsboro (Oregon) |

Frequently Asked Questions
Which VPS hosting is best in the USA?
It depends on how long you will keep the server and what currency you want to pay in. For the lowest price on modern hardware in a US data center, netcup's VPS 500 G12 in Manassas (€5.91 a month incl. VAT on a 12-month term) led our September 2026 price table. For dollar billing and US data centers with a one-year term, IONOS VPS M+ is $11 a month. For the most RAM per euro on a two-year term, Contabo Cloud VPS 4 gives 4 vCPU and 8 GB for €5.50 plus a US location fee. If you need hourly billing with no commitment, DigitalOcean and Vultr charge $24 for the same 2 vCPU / 4 GB class.
What is the cheapest VPS hosting in the USA?
On a like-for-like 2 vCPU / 4 GB server in a US data center, the cheapest list price we found on September 11, 2026 was netcup's VPS 500 G12 in Manassas at €5.91 a month including VAT (€4.97 net), followed by Contabo's Cloud VPS 4 at €5.50 plus a US location fee and Hostinger's KVM 2 at $8.99 on a two-year term.
Is DigitalOcean cheaper than Vultr?
At 2 vCPU / 4 GB, Vultr is $4 cheaper on its regular SSD plan ($20 against DigitalOcean's $24 Basic Droplet, which is also regular SSD) and the same $24 if you take Vultr's NVMe High Performance plan. Both bill hourly with no term, and both have several US locations.
Does a US data center make my site faster for US visitors?
For the first request, yes: the round trip from a US visitor to a US server is shorter than to Europe, and that shows up as lower time to first byte. Beyond that first byte, a CDN, caching and the size of your pages usually matter more than which coast the server sits on. Our server locations and latency guide walks through how to test it for your own audience.
Do cheap VPS plans require a yearly contract?
The cheapest ones usually do. netcup's monthly price needs a 12-month term (it also offers hourly billing at a slightly higher rate), IONOS VPS M+ is a one-year contract, and Hostinger's $8.99 and Contabo's €5.50 both need two years. InterServer is the exception in the low tier: $3 per slice, billed month to month. DigitalOcean, Vultr and Hetzner bill hourly with no term, and Hostwinds sells its unmanaged VPS month to month.
What the table cannot tell you
Support quality, how many customers share a host, how the disks behave at 2 a.m. on a Sunday, and whether the company will still be charging the same price in a year: none of that is on a pricing page, so none of it is in the table. Those are the questions the individual reviews try to answer with what can be verified, and they are where to go next: the Contabo review for the 24-month term and location fee in detail, the InterServer VPS review for what price-locked, older hardware buys you, the Vultr review for the $20 shelf, and the Hetzner review together with the June 2026 price increase page if you are holding one of the old-price servers. If your users are in Europe rather than the US, the European VPS comparison is the same exercise with different geography, and Hetzner's German prices still look very different there. The best VPS hosting in the USA, in the end, is the one whose conditions you read before you saw the price.
